Commentaire : The species is one I saw in Costa Rica, many years ago. It has a huge range, all the way from Central America south to northern Argentina. The bird in the painting is a male. The female lacks the rust-coloured breast band (this is the opposite of our native Belted Kingfisher -- the only one found in Ontario -- where the female has a rust coloured band across the chest, but the male does not.)
