<image:caption>The bright ruby-red cap golden-topaz throat/upper chest of this bird is not due to constitutional pigment but is a consequence of the physical structure of the feathers in these areas. These feathers act as refractors diffraction gratings -the refractive elements split white light into its constituent colours (like rain in sunlight creating a rainbow) -most of the colours are then filtered out by the diffractive elements leaving a pure bright irridescent colour. But all this depends on sunlight hitting at just the right angle!. Colibri rubis-topaze mâle adulte, nuptial. Photo de Steve Garvie</image:caption>

In late October the hunting is very easy as large numbers of tired passerines are migrating through the Balearics on their way back to Africa. By late October most of the adult Eleonora's Falcons have left the breeding cliffs. These birds winter in Eastern Southern Africa especially in Madagascar.

Eleonora was the Sardinian heroine, Giudicessa Eleonora d'Arborea (1350 - 1404), who fought for independence from Aragon and made laws protecting nesting birds of prey, she lives on in the spirit of this elegant falcon. Faucon d'Éléonore 1ère année. Photo de Steve Garvie</image:caption>

<image:caption>This amazing bird has one of the loudest calls of any species. The males spend much of the day calling to attract females by producing loud 'BOK' calls or a series of bell-like noises much like a hammer striking an anvil.
This species is primarily a frugivore which favours primary rain forest -in this habitat food is so plentiful that the males spend only a few hours foraging the remainder of the time calling. Females rear the young alone. Araponga barbu mâle adulte, nuptial. Photo de Steve Garvie</image:caption>

<image:caption>An uncommon swift of humid montane primary forest high quality secondary forest. It tends to feed at higher levels than many other swifts.
The nest is built on a vertical face always in a damp shady place usually near water. The nest is made of mud, saliva plant debris. In Trinidad these birds breed between may august, two broods per season being common. Two eggs are usually laid.
The photograph shows a male bird (females lack the chestnut collar) which was nesting above the entrance to Dunstan Cave in the grounds of the Asa Wright Nature Centre. Martinet à collier roux mâle adulte, nuptial. Photo de Steve Garvie</image:caption>

<image:caption>These weird birds are the subjects of many local superstitions. On Trinidad they are known as Diablotin .
Oilbirds can navigate caves using a primitive form of echolocation. Despite their formidable looking beaks they are frugivores preferring Oil-palm Laurel fruits. Their small weak feet are of little use for perching so much of the fruit they eat is harvested whilst they hover. . Guacharo des cavernes adulte, nuptial. Photo de Steve Garvie</image:caption>
