Eastern Screech Owl
The Eastern Screech-Owl is found throughout nearly all of the eastern and Midwestern United States, north into southern Canada. It has two colour morphs, one grey the other red. There is a huge amount of variation among individual birds. Where I live, in southern Ontario, the red morph is the rarer. But I thought of it one day in early November when I passed a tangle of interwoven wild grape and Virginia creeper foliage, that it would make a good setting for a red morph Eastern Screech-Owl. I did some sketches, and finally decided to do a rather impressionistic view of the foliage, and included a red morph Eastern Screech-Owl in the midst of it. Le petit-duc maculé peut être observé dans presque tout l’Est et le Midwest des Etats-Unis ainsi que dans le sud du Canada. Il présente 2 phases différentes : l’une grise et l’autre rousse. Il existe une grande variation individuelle. A l’endroit où je vis, au sud de l’Ontario, la phase rousse est la plus rare, mais lorsque je suis passé devant un amas de vigne vierge dans les premiers jours de novembre, j’ai pensé qu’il ferait un excellent arrière-plan pour ce petit hibou. J’ai donc imaginé de multiples scénarios et j’ai finalement décidé de réaliser une représentation assez impressioniste du feuillage et j’y ai introduit mon petit-duc.
