Peregrine Falcon - Falco peregrinus

Faucon pèlerin - Falco peregrinus

A few weeks ago I showed an oil painting of an immature female Peregrine Falcon of the subspecies Falco peregrinus pealei, which is non-migratory and found only on the west coast of North America, primarily on North Jurile Islands and the Aleutians south to Queen Charlotte Island, off the north coast of British Columbia. This painting shows an adult male of the subspecies, F. p. anatum, that is found through most of the rest of North America, and is quite highly migratory. This was done approximately life size, with gouache watercolour on acrylic on compressed hardboard. This is the race once thought to be endangered, although they seem to be recovering well. There is also a third North American subspecies, F. p. tundrius, which is the smallest and palest, and is found furthest north in North America, above the arctic circle.
