They are badly misnamed. They don’t nest or winter in Connecticut and are no more likely to be seen there on migration than anywhere else in eastern or parts of Midwestern North America. The species breeds in a band of boreal forest (taiga) that extends from Alberta through the northern prairie provinces east to central Quebec. They spend the winter, so far as is known, in southern Central and tropical South America, although their exact winter range is not well known. They are closely related to the Mourning Warbler (O. philadelphia) and the MacGillivray’s Warbler (O. tolmiei) but of the three species, they have the boldest, most unbroken white eye-ring (buffy in young birds). They tend to walk, or strut, on the ground or along branches, rather like an Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapillus).
