There is only one species of tern called the Elegant Tern (Sterna elegans), but to me they are all elegant, and that includes the Forster’s Tern, which has a very scattered and interrupted breeding range. It breeds on the central prairies, but also on parts of the west coast, the east coast, and the Gulf (of Mexico) coast, as well as in the Great Lakes region, including extreme southwestern Ontario. Postbreeding birds wander widely, the young and winter-plumage birds rather easy to identify from other similar terns because of distinctive dark “ear patches” behind the eye. They are migratory
