Northern Saw-whet Owl - Aegolius acadicus

Petite Nyctale

Northern Saw-whet Owl
Weighing from about 80 to 90 grams, this is the smallest owl in eastern North America. Its range extends all the way from Alaska to Nova Scotia, and south in wooded mountains deep into Mexico. The ones on Queen Charlotte Island are much darker and richer in colour (A. a. brooksi) while the southern Mexican ones are paler (A. a. brodkorbi) and sometimes hybridize with a southern, related species endemic to Central America, called the Unspotted Saw-whet Owl (A. ridgwayi).
