Northern Flicker - Colaptes auratus

Pic flamboyant

Northern Flicker
This vignette shows the western race of the Northern Flicker. There is an
adult male (left), adult female (upper), and a fledgling male (right). The
flicker is widely distributed in temperate North America, and the ones in
the east are so different (yellow under the wings instead of red; black
moustache mark on the male instead of red) that they have been considered to
be different species. But they hybridize readily in the middle of the
continent, and even at the eastern and western parts of their respective
ranges one can sometimes find hybrid traits in certain individuals.
