Osprey - Pandion haliaetus

Balbuzard pêcheur

Osprey
The Osprey has one of the largest ranges of any species of bird, being found on every continent except Antarctica. There are several races of which the one I painted is native to North America. Here, in Ontario, it is quite common; I have even seen them catching fish in urban ornamental ponds. Many populations are quite migratory, moving well south (even into the southern hemisphere) of freezing conditions. So far as I know there is no northward winter migration of populations in the southern hemisphere, although some such populations are essentially non-migratory.
