A species essentially restricted to Venezuela Tobago. Similar to the much commoner Brown-crested Flycatcher (M. tyrannulus) from which it is distinguished by a lack of a pink base to the lower mandible (uniformly dark bill) grey rather than rufous edging to the primaries with no rufous in the tail. It is indistinguishable from Panama Flycatcher the brunnescens race of Short-crested Flycatcher in the field but does not overlap these species throughout most of its range.
