It frequents wet areas, such as lakes, wetlands and estuaries. It is often perched in tree near water. It feeds mainly on fish, but also carrions, chicks and eggs, and sometimes aquatic birds larger than flamingos.



Il fréquente les zones humides, tels que les lacs, les marais et les estuaires. Il est souvent perché sur un arbre près de l'eau. Il se nourrit principalement de poisson, mais aussi de charognes, poussins et oeufs, et parfois d'oiseaux aquatiques plus grands que les flamants.
